What is SoulPerSuit? (our mission)

started as an art project between friends. The idea was for a simple project that would be easy to do long distance (Erin in Texas and me in North Carolina) on a topic that would allow each of us to meditate and explore.

I chose playing cards as the "canvas" because they are inexpensive and easy to send through the mail.

Erin chose the topic of "Worship" and I chose "Decay/Divine", a topic I've been exploring for about 3 years. When it looked like there were others interested in joining us, we decided to use one deck of cards for each topic so that there was a "Worship deck" and a "Decay/Divine deck". We had 8 participants in the first .

There were no rules attached to the project except for a deadline. Participants could express themselves in any medium they wanted to explore.

The results were amazing. The biggest reward was seeing each other's work and being led into worship through their interpretations.

The desire for a project like this was picked up by our friend Sandi. There is a real hunger out there for visual expression in the church and Sandi wanted to meet that need. So the three of us have ventured out to play our hand and see if is aces.

Our first venture was a captive audience at the 2003 Creekside Bible Fellowship Women's Retreat. We learned so much at the retreat and are so appreciative of their willingness to try it. As with the project, the big pay off was seeing each other's work. Their time and resources were extremely limited compaired to the project and that made their expressions that much more powerful.

Our Mission

What is it?
SPS is a Bible-based, full sensory, creative experience that explores, expresses, discovers and internalizes the mysteries of our relationship with God.

Why does it exist?
The creators of SPS believe that everyone is creative because God is a creator. We want individuals to rediscover and use their creative nature in their pursuit of understanding and experiencing these God mysteries.

How will we go about fulfilling this purpose?
1. Mystery – Provide a medium drawn on a foundation of Biblical truth for a self-guided “soul pursuit” of God.

2. Creativity – Stimulate creativity through multi-sensory thought provokers or “shuffling the deck”
3. Expression – Encourage self-expression through multi-media journaling and “altar” art
4. Community – Network local, on-line and one-on-one communities through workshops, the internet and relationships

"I am intrigued! Sounds like a project I would really enjoy and be stretched by!"

"I'm looking forward to this fun project too... something to make me sit down and create on paper (or whatever) instead of just in my head." - Beverly

"Another option is assigning just one theme to each deck of cards, then we could compare four people's interpretation of the same theme." - Erin

"When this all began, I hoped that I could find 3 people who would participate and we have 8 diverse and talented people." - Rhonda

"I think she (Sandi) views the Christian walk as a "whole person" experience - mind, heart, senses, the whole she-bang." - Erin

"She (Sandi) was quite ecstatic about the idea! Her cogs and wheels were just chugging away as I described the concept. This little project is feeding the souls of many a Christian artist!" - Erin

"I'm very excited to be a part of this mission and pray that I will learn much through my own personal pursuit." - Trinh

"I off-handedly mentioned the project during our discussion of the video, and a few people expressed an interest in discovering exactly what this little project is." - Erin

"So, after years of feeling a little boxed-in with the fill-in-the-blank style of devotional book, this project has added a huge depth and breadth to my spiritual walk." -Erin
