Two Opposing Views

Our author Jesus is referring to salt as flavoring and its property of not losing it saltiness even though the literal salt they may have been referring to was not most likely from the dead sea area, was impure and actually did lose it's flavor. Salt was valued as a seasoning, a flavoring agent. Salt was a symbol of purity. Salt creates thirst. Salt has the ability to preserve.
