Grateful

At church we are going through Randy Alcorn’s material on having an eternal perspective. Randy pointed out that Paul, upon receiving a monetary gift from the Philippian church, was less excited about the money than he was about the fact that God would bless them for giving.

After I fell, I found out our friends would be providing meals for five nights. FIVE NIGHTS! I was not so much excited about the food—it was great, but we could have ordered pizza and done McDonald’s. I was more excited that “you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty…what I want is for you to receive a well-earned reward because of your kindness. At the moment I have all I need—more than I need! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me—they are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable to God and pleases Him.”

I was already thinking of this verse, and then my friend, Terri Justice, sent it to me saying it had made her think of me. Terri had said she would bring lunch one day last week, but I had food in such abundant supply that I told her not to bring it, but simply to enjoy the reward God would give her for her willingness to bring it.

The heart represents the love of Christ experienced through people’s immense generosity.

The flower represents the growth I see in them as they care for others.

And the stethoscope and nurse’s hat…these are in honor of the nurse who, when I entered the ER, told me she was sorry I was hurt before asking for my insurance card. She saw me as a person, a human, before seeing me as a need, a broken body part.

The quote about prayer—I cut that from a card I received today from the parent of a girl I befriended through college ministries MORE THAN 20 YEARS AGO. This parent heard about my broken clavicle and wrote to say she was praying.

The supplies to do all this SPS art were sent by Rhonda, my dear friend. Her tools were instruments of grace and worship for me today.
You can’t tell, but this is pasted on the back of another card I received today from a former student. She wrote, “Ouch! I recommend a fractured toe or, better yet, a hangnail next time.
Your write-up was both interesting and agonizing to read. But overall it was encouraging to see the way the lord orchestrated your relief to bring you through a painful day. Your sharing that may benefit a lot of people. May the Lord bless and heal you. We’re praying for you!” - Sandra Glahn
